The Complete Guide
Schedule, tickets, grandstands and shuttles, plus the easiest way to reach the Algarve International Circuit from Faro Airport, Lisbon, Porto, Seville and anywhere in the Algarve.
Quick answer: how do I get to the MotoGP in Portimão?
The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA) sits near Mexilhoeira Grande, just west of Portimão. From Faro Airport it is about 82 km and 53 minutes by car on the A22 outside race traffic, and from Lisbon about 290 km and 2h30.
Your options: a pre-booked private transfer (door to door, fixed price), the free organiser shuttle from Praia da Rocha or Lagos Marina (hourly, ticket holders only), a taxi, or a rental car. Race Sunday is the busiest day, so plan your journey before you land.
About the race
MotoGP at Portimão: the calendar's rollercoaster
The Algarve International Circuit opened on 2 November 2008, built in just seven months, and its first big race was the final round of the Superbike World Championship. Since MotoGP arrived in 2020, Portimão has become a fan favourite for its blind crests, steep elevation changes and long, fast sections that give riders little room to recover from a mistake.
The 2026 Grand Prix of Portugal was moved to 20–22 November after the Qatar round was postponed. That makes Portimão the penultimate round, one week before the Valencia finale on 27–29 November. We covered the change in our date-change update.
The title fight heading into Portugal
At the time of writing (early October 2026), the official standings show Jorge Martín (Aprilia) on 333 points, just two ahead of Marc Márquez (Ducati Lenovo) on 331, with Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) third on 284. Four rounds (Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia and Qatar) still come before the paddock reaches the Algarve, so the picture will change, but a late-season title fight is likely to put real pressure on this weekend.
Also on the 2026 grid: Francesco Bagnaia, Pedro Acosta, Fabio Quartararo, Alex Márquez, Fabio Di Giannantonio and Toprak Razgatlıoğlu on the Prima Pramac Yamaha. Moto2 and Moto3 race on the same bill.

Programme
The race weekend, day by day
Every class runs all three days. Exact session times are not yet confirmed, so treat the outline below as the typical weekend pattern and check the official event page for the final timetable.
Free practice
Friday 20 November
The calmest day. Roads are quieter, you can walk the circuit and try different viewpoints, and it is the easiest day for a relaxed first visit. Practice runs through the day, so arrive for the morning sessions if you can.
Qualifying & sprint races
Saturday 21 November
Qualifying sets the grid for Sunday, and the sprint races give you real racing on Saturday. Expect noticeably bigger crowds than Friday.
Race day
Sunday 22 November
Moto3, Moto2 and the MotoGP Grand Prix. The circuit warns of a very large influx of vehicles on Sunday, because weekend-ticket holders and Sunday-only visitors arrive together. Plan to be at the circuit several hours before the first race.
Tickets
Tickets & grandstands
The official ticket shop offers a 3-day weekend pass, a Race Day (Sunday) ticket and hospitality packages. Online sales run up to race day, subject to availability, but the best seats go first.
The 9 grandstands
The circuit has nine grandstands: Main (track level and upper level, on the start/finish straight), Portimão, Portimão 2, Lagos, Sagres, Solverde, Sul and Norte. Each grandstand has its own colour-coded gate, and your ticket only opens that gate, so check your gate before you leave your hotel. Giant screens near each grandstand show the races live, and toilets and food outlets are spread around the site.
Good to know: tickets cannot be returned, you can leave and re-enter with your ticket (each entry is logged), and your ticket must be shown on your phone. Prices vary by grandstand. Third-party listings in 2026 have shown weekend grandstand seats from roughly €105 to €230, but always compare with the official shop and avoid unofficial sellers.
Getting there
Getting to the circuit: all options compared
The circuit is out in the countryside west of Portimão, not in town. There is no train station at the gate and no regular public bus to it, so almost everyone arrives by car, taxi or shuttle. Here is the honest comparison for race weekend:
| Option | Time to circuit | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (QP Transfers) Recommended | Faro Airport ~55–60 min · Algarve hotels 10–55 min | Groups, families, late arrivals, airport-to-hotel-to-circuit in one booking | Book early for Friday arrivals and the Sunday return |
| Official free shuttle | Depends on traffic; hourly departures | Budget travellers staying in Portimão or Lagos | Ticket holders only; fixed departure times; busiest on Sunday |
| Taxi | 10–15 min from Portimão town | Short hops from Portimão or Praia da Rocha | Getting a taxi back from the circuit after the race is hard |
| Uber / Bolt | Similar to a taxi | Short trips in town | Limited cars, surge pricing, and few drivers willing to come out to the circuit |
| Rental car | ~53 min from Faro Airport | Exploring the Algarve before and after | Sunday queues, early arrival needed, A22 tolls are electronic only |
| Train / bus | 2+ hours from Faro with a change | Getting to Portimão on a tight budget | Does not solve the last stretch to the circuit |

From Faro Airport to the Algarve International Circuit
Faro Airport (FAO) is the main gateway for the Grand Prix. The drive to the circuit is about 81.8 km and roughly 53 minutes via the A22, according to the circuit's own directions. On race weekend, add time for traffic near the circuit, especially on Sunday.
The simplest plan is a single private transfer. Your driver tracks your flight, meets you in Arrivals and takes you to your hotel, or straight to the circuit if you land on race morning. See our Faro Airport transfers for fixed-price routes to Portimão, Lagos, Albufeira and Vilamoura.
| From | Approx. drive to circuit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Faro Airport (FAO) | ~53 min (81.8 km) | A22 motorway |
| Portimão / Praia da Rocha | 10–15 min | Closest big hotel base |
| Alvor | ~10 min | Quiet fishing village |
| Lagos | ~20 min | Official shuttle pick-up point |
| Carvoeiro / Lagoa | ~20–25 min | Cliffs and small beaches |
| Albufeira | ~40–45 min | Largest choice of hotels |
| Vilamoura / Faro city | ~50–60 min | Close to the airport |
Driving yourself? The A22 uses electronic tolls only. Ask your rental company about a toll device, or you will need to pay online or at a CTT post office after your trip.
From the north
From Lisbon & Porto to MotoGP Portimão
Lisbon Airport (LIS) to the circuit is about 290 km and 2h30 by road via the A2 and A22. A private transfer is the simplest way to do it, because the alternatives (train or coach) take around four hours and still leave you without a ride for the final stretch to the circuit. If you are staying in Lisbon first, we can pick you up from your hotel or the airport and take you straight to your Algarve base.
Porto to Portimão is a long day by road, roughly 530–550 km and 5 to 5½ hours with stops. Many fans from the north prefer to fly into Faro (check current schedules) and use a short transfer, or split the trip with a night in Lisbon. For fixed-price long-distance journeys, see our long trips and message us your route.
From Spain
From Seville & southern Spain
Portimão is a natural road trip for Spanish fans, and with Valencia the very next weekend, many are planning a back-to-back trip. There are no border checks between Spain and Portugal, and the crossing at Ayamonte is the main route into the Algarve.
| From | Approx. distance | Approx. drive |
|---|---|---|
| Huelva | ~190 km | ~2 hours |
| Seville (airport or city) | ~280 km | ~3 hours |
| Jerez / Cádiz | ~340–380 km | ~3½–4 hours |
| Málaga | ~500 km | ~5 hours |
Mind the clock: in November, Portugal is one hour behind mainland Spain. Check your ticket times and shuttle departures in Portuguese time.
We arrange private transfers from Seville Airport and southern Spain to Portimão, Lagos, Alvor and the rest of the Algarve, as well as return legs after the race. Send us your pickup point, passenger count and dates, and we will confirm a fixed price.
Shuttles & parking
Official shuttles & parking
According to the organiser, two free parking areas operate in Portimão (Praia da Rocha) and Lagos (Marina), with free shuttle buses to and from the circuit for ticket holders. Shuttles start at about 07:30 on event days, run roughly every hour, and return after the day's racing ends. Show your ticket to board. Parking is also available around the circuit itself.
🚌 Official free shuttle
Great value if you are staying in Portimão or Lagos and are comfortable with fixed hourly departures. Expect queues on Sunday evening.
🚗 Private transfer
Hotel pickup at a time that suits you, no timetable, luggage and group-friendly, and a confirmed ride back when the last race ends.
Check before you go: shuttle times and locations can be adjusted for each event. Confirm them on the official parking page in the week before the race.
Why the return journey matters most
Getting to the circuit is easy to plan. The pressure point is leaving: tens of thousands of fans head for the exits at the same time on Sunday. If you are not taking the shuttle, pre-book your return and agree a meeting point and time with your driver before you go in. Phone batteries run low after a full day, so save the driver's number and the meeting point offline.

Preparation
What to bring & race-day tips
- Your ticket on your phone (webook app) and photo ID. Both are required at the gate.
- Know your gate. Each grandstand has its own colour-coded entrance, and your ticket only works there.
- Ear protection. MotoGP is loud, and ear defenders are essential for children.
- Layers and a rain jacket. Mornings and evenings can be cool and showers are possible, even when afternoons are warm.
- Sun cream and a hat. November sun at the circuit is stronger than you expect.
- Comfortable shoes. The site is hilly and you will walk from car park or shuttle drop-off to your grandstand.
- A power bank. Your ticket, maps and transfer contact all live on your phone.
- Check the bag rules on the official site before packing.
- Arrive early on Sunday. The circuit itself advises arriving several hours ahead to find parking, pass ticket control and reach your seat.
- Save your pickup point offline, along with your driver's number and your accommodation address.
